Best season
Late May to mid-June and September to early October. The shoulder weeks carry warm Mediterranean light, swimmable water and the harbour at its most composed. July and August bring the yachts, the heat and the crowds; the village empties and many kitchens shutter from November through March.

Portofino is small in a way that the rest of the Mediterranean has forgotten how to be. A single curved harbour of ochre and rose facades, a piazzetta the size of a tennis court, a fishing village that fortune turned into the most rarefied address on the Italian Riviera and that, by accident of geography, has never been allowed to grow. The promontory it sits on is a protected park; there is nowhere to expand, and so the village holds its scale. What changes hands here is not real estate but reputation, and the result is a place that rewards those who arrive knowing exactly what they came for.

The wider Riviera di Levante frames it: Santa Margherita Ligure with its belle-époque seafront, Camogli’s vertiginous painted houses, the hidden cove of San Fruttuoso with its medieval abbey reachable only by boat or on foot. The coast is steep, green and fragrant with pine and broom, falling straight into clear water. This is not a beach destination in the conventional sense; the pleasure is the headland walks, the boat that takes you to a swim above the submerged Christ of the Abyss, the Ligurian table of pesto pounded in a mortar and fish baked in salt.

The rhythm of a good stay is unhurried and water-facing. Mornings are for the coastal path to the lighthouse or a launch slipping out before the day boats; afternoons for the Splendido’s pool and gardens above the bay; evenings for the slow theatre of the piazzetta, an aperitivo as the yachts swing on their moorings and the light goes gold. Dining is the quiet centre of gravity, from Carlo Cracco’s starred kitchen in the old Pitosforo to a harbour trattoria where the same family has cooked since 1850.

Come in the shoulder weeks of June and September, when the water is warm and the village composed, and give it five nights. The Splendido, reborn in 2025 under Martin Brudnizki and now home to the first Dior Spa in Italy, remains the gravitational point of the whole coast; the harbour and its maisons are a short shuttle below. Portofino does not ask to impress. It assumes you already understand why you are there.

Ideal for
Couples seeking a discreet, design-led Riviera retreat · Repeat Mediterranean travellers who want substance over spectacle · Yacht owners and charter guests using Portofino as a base · Culinary travellers drawn to Ligurian cooking and a serious Michelin scene

Where to stay

The Houses

Splendido, A Belmond Hotel, Portofino

Belmond (LVMH) · Hillside grand hotel · Above Portofino harbour, within the regional park

Ultra Premier

A former 16th-century Benedictine monastery turned the Riviera's most storied hotel, perched in terraced gardens above the bay. A sensitive 2025 reimagining by Martin Brudnizki returned the 52-room house to the spirit of a private Italian villa, anchored in Chiavari rattan, Albissola ceramics and noble materials. It remains the address against which all others on this coast are measured.

Why The single most legendary hotel on the Italian Riviera, freshly restored without losing its soul.

Experiences

Private launch to San Fruttuoso and the Christ of the Abyss

Private skippered charter

Private boat charter

A skippered classic launch traces the protected coastline to the Abbey of San Fruttuoso, reachable only by sea or foot, and the bronze Christ of the Abyss submerged offshore since 1954. Swimming and snorkelling above the statue, with the abbey beach to yourself before the day boats arrive.

Why The defining Portofino excursion, transformed by going private and early.

Chris-Craft Corsair harbour cruise from Splendido

Hotel-arranged private hire

Private boat

The Splendido's own vintage Chris-Craft Corsair runs aperitivo and swimming cruises along the headland, calling at hidden coves between Portofino and Paraggi. A timeless way to see the coast from the water in the late-afternoon light.

Why A genuine piece of dolce-vita boating, exclusive to the hotel's guests.

Lighthouse walk to the Faro di Portofino

Public path, best with a private guide

Walking / nature

A paved coastal path climbs from the village past Castello Brown's gardens to the Faro lighthouse at the point, where a small bar serves a drink above the open sea. A short, scenic introduction to the Parco di Portofino headland.

Why The most beautiful half-hour stroll on the coast, ending with a sunset aperitivo at the lighthouse.

Guided traverse of the Parco di Portofino to San Fruttuoso

Private guided trek

Hiking

A guided hike across the wooded promontory on historic mule tracks, descending through holm-oak and Mediterranean scrub to the abbey at San Fruttuoso, with a boat collecting you at the cove. A rewarding day for those who want the headland on foot.

Why The wild, untouristed side of Portofino, with a private guide reading the landscape.

Cultural

The hilltop castle, once a British consul's residence, holds terraced Italian gardens and the finest framed view back over the harbour. Quiet, cultivated and best timed for the soft light of late afternoon.

Why The postcard view of Portofino, from above and away from the crowds.

Shopping

The Maisons

Piazza Martiri dell'Olivetta (the Piazzetta)

The pastel harbour square is the unlikely home of a concentrated cluster of maisons, their boutiques folded discreetly into the painted facades. Shopping here is a matter of strolling between the cafe tables rather than browsing a mall.

Via Roma and the harbour lanes

The narrow approach to the piazzetta lines up a mix of fashion houses, artisan jewellers and Ligurian specialty shops selling pesto, olive oil and embroidered linens. The place for less obvious purchases and local provisions.
