Amalfi Coast
A vertical coastline of pastel villages, lemon terraces and cliff-edge villas where Italy folds into the Tyrrhenian Sea.
- Suggested stay
- from 4 · 6 ideal · up to 8 nights
- Best season
- Late May to June and September to early October offer warm sea, long light and gardens in bloom without the August crush; many properties close from November through March.
The Amalfi Coast is a thirty-mile ribbon of cliffs falling into the Tyrrhenian, where fishing villages climb the rock in tiers of ochre and rose. Positano cascades to its small beach, Ravello sits high and quiet above the haze, and Amalfi keeps the bones of a maritime republic. The light, the lemons and the sea define everything here.
This is a coast best understood slowly and from the water. The grand villa hotels are houses first and hotels second, run for generations by the same families, their terraces strung with bougainvillea and lit at night by candlelight. Mornings begin on the rock; afternoons belong to a wooden gozzo or a chartered yacht rounding the Li Galli islands toward Capri.
The kitchens are among the most decorated in southern Italy, built on the Campanian larder of sea, garden and citrus rather than on spectacle. An evening at La Sponda or Zass, both lit and sited for the view as much as the plate, is as much a part of the place as the coastline itself.
It is not a coast of convenience. Roads are narrow and slow, and the rhythm rewards those who travel by helicopter and by boat rather than by car. Arrive that way, and the Amalfi Coast opens at its own unhurried pace.
Ideal for
Couples and honeymooners · Discerning culinary travelers · Multigenerational families on private villas and yachts · Repeat Mediterranean visitors seeking scenery and slow luxury

The Houses
Le Sirenuse
Independent (Sersale family) · Iconic cliffside villa hotel · Positano
An eighteenth-century family villa opened as a hotel in 1951 and still run by the Sersale family, Le Sirenuse is the defining address of Positano. Antiques, hand-painted Vietri tiles and a sea-facing pool give it the feel of a private house, with the Aldo Sersale-designed Franco's Bar and the Oasi spa added without breaking the spell.
Why The benchmark for the coast: privately owned, faultlessly run and the only address that genuinely feels like a home rather than a hotel.
Dining: La Sponda, 1 Michelin star
Visit hotel →Il San Pietro di Positano
Independent (Attanasio / Cinque family) · Cliff-carved Relais & Chateaux retreat · Positano (toward Praiano)
Built into the cliff a few minutes east of Positano, Il San Pietro is one of the most dramatically sited hotels in Italy, its rooms terraced down sheer rock to a private sea platform and beach club reached by lift. A Relais & Chateaux property and a longtime family endeavor, it pairs flowering terraces with a private organic garden that feeds the kitchen.
Why Unmatched seclusion and the single most spectacular cliff setting on the coast, with a Michelin kitchen and private sea access very few hotels can offer.
Dining: Zass, 1 Michelin star
Visit hotel →Caruso, A Belmond Hotel, Amalfi Coast
Belmond (LVMH) · Restored 11th-century palace · Ravello
An eleventh-century palazzo restored on the highest point of Ravello, the Caruso sits some 365 meters above the sea with frescoed salons, century-old gardens and one of the most photographed infinity pools in the world. Its calm, elevated position is the counterpoint to the bustle of the coastal towns below.
Why The serene high-altitude alternative to the seafront hotels, with Belmond polish, a legendary pool and direct access to Ravello's villas and festival.
Dining: Ristorante Belvedere (no Michelin star)
Visit hotel →Borgo Santandrea
Reimagined cliffside resort with private beach · Amalfi (Conca dei Marini side)
Reopened in 2022 after a top-to-bottom restoration, Borgo Santandrea is the coast's most accomplished new-generation property: hand-made ceramic tiles throughout, a series of terraces falling to a rare private sand beach, and a confident modern Mediterranean design sensibility. It quickly earned a Michelin star at its restaurant Alici.
Why The freshest serious luxury on the coast and one of very few addresses with a genuine private beach, ideal for travelers who want design and a Michelin kitchen without the period formality.
Dining: Alici, 1 Michelin star

What to do
Experiences
Private gozzo or motor-yacht charter to Capri and the Li Galli islands
Private charterCharter / sea
A full-day crewed charter rounding Punta Campanella, the Li Galli archipelago and on to Capri's Faraglioni, Blue Grotto and Marina Piccola, with swimming stops and lunch arranged onboard or at a beach club. Classic wooden gozzi or fast motor-yachts are available.
Why The coast is built to be seen from the water, and a private boat dissolves the road traffic that otherwise defines the day. The single most worthwhile experience here.
Helicopter transfer and scenic flight from Naples
Private helicopterAviation
A roughly fifteen to twenty minute helicopter flight from Naples Capodichino directly to Positano, Amalfi, Ravello or Capri, with operators such as Hoverfly basing aircraft at the airport. Doubles as a scenic flight over the Sorrentine peninsula and coastline.
Why Replaces a slow, winding ninety-minute road transfer with a fifteen-minute arrival and an unforgettable first view of the coast.
After-hours private access to Villa Cimbrone and Villa Rufolo, Ravello
Private guided accessCultural / by-appointment
Privately guided visits to Ravello's two great villa gardens, including the Terrace of Infinity at Villa Cimbrone and the cliffside gardens of Villa Rufolo that inspired Wagner, arranged before or after public hours where possible.
Why Ravello's gardens are the cultural heart of the coast; experiencing them without crowds, ideally timed to a concert of the Ravello Festival, is a quiet highlight.
Guided Path of the Gods hike with private transfers
Private guideAdventure / nature
The Sentiero degli Dei high above Positano walked with a private naturalist guide, with vehicle or boat transfers handling the ascent and descent so guests walk only the spectacular ridge section.
Why The best land-based view on the coast, made effortless by removing the steep stair climbs at either end.
Lemon grove and limoncello experience with a coastal family producer
By appointmentCulinary / by-appointment
A private visit to a terraced Amalfi sfusato lemon grove with the family that farms it, tasting limoncello and produce, often combined with a market visit and a cooking session such as the Caruso's pasta class with Mamma Carmela.
Why The lemon defines this landscape and table; meeting the families who farm the terraces is the most authentic culinary experience on offer.
Private day to Pompeii or Herculaneum with an archaeologist
Private guideCultural / by-appointment
A privately guided half or full day at Pompeii or the smaller, better-preserved Herculaneum with a specialist archaeologist, reached quickly by helicopter or chauffeur from the coast.
Why The Roman cities at the foot of Vesuvius are unmatched anywhere; a specialist guide and a private itinerary turn a crowded site into a genuine privilege.
Shopping
The Maisons
Positano - Via dei Mulini and the beachfront lanes
Positano's shopping is artisanal rather than corporate: resort and linen wear, hand-made leather sandals and ceramics in the lanes winding down to Spiaggia Grande. Emporio Sirenuse, inside Le Sirenuse, is the most polished address for resort fashion and accessories.
Ravello and Amalfi - ceramics and artisan ateliers
Ravello and Amalfi trade in hand-painted Vietri-style majolica, paper from Amalfi's historic mills and bespoke leather goods rather than international houses. Best for collectible ceramics and made-to-measure sandals.
Capri - Via Camerelle (day trip)
For the global maisons, the address is Capri, an easy boat or helicopter hop away. Via Camerelle and the surrounding lanes hold the flagship boutiques, alongside Canfora for the island's famous made-to-measure sandals.
By appointment
Made-to-measure leather sandals (Positano, Capri and Amalfi ateliers) · Commissioned hand-painted ceramics
Arrival & departure
Coming & Going
Airports
Primary gateway, roughly 60 km and a 75-90 minute road transfer from Positano, or about 15-20 minutes by helicopter. Has a general/private aviation terminal and a Sala VIP lounge.
Smaller airport east of the coast that has expanded commercial service; can be a closer entry point for the Amalfi/Ravello side. Verify current routes and FBO services before relying on it.
Long-haul and private-jet alternative roughly 3 hours by road or a short helicopter/fixed-wing hop, often used when Naples slots are constrained.
Private terminals
- Naples Capodichino general aviation / private terminal (NAP)
- Sala VIP lounge at Naples airport
Meet & greet · gate escort
- Hotel concierge-arranged gate-to-car escort at Naples
- Ground-handler VIP greeters at NAP private terminal
First-class & arrivals lounges
- Sala VIP Napoli at Naples Capodichino
Private transfers
- Chauffeured Mercedes/Land Rover transfers (Naples to Positano/Ravello, approx. 75-90 min)
- Private helicopter transfers (Hoverfly and similar operators, Naples to coast in approx. 15-20 min)
- Private boat and yacht transfers along the coast and to Capri
- Complimentary hotel boat outings (e.g. the Caruso's wooden Ercole)
Private aviation
- Naples Capodichino (NAP) handles private jets via its general aviation terminal; helicopter operators base aircraft on site for immediate onward transfer to the coast.
- Salerno and Rome airports serve as overflow/alternative FBO options for larger aircraft or constrained Naples slots.
Immigration fast-track
VIP meet-and-greet and fast-track through arrivals at Naples can be arranged through the hotels' concierge teams and ground handlers; Italy has no separate non-EU immigration fast lane comparable to Gulf hubs, so verify current providers at time of travel.
Curator’s notes — pending verification
- Machine-drafted from research. Verify hotel operators, Michelin stars and any dated claims before publishing.
- Le Sirenuse's La Sponda is reported as retaining 1 Michelin star with chef Gennaro Russo in the 2026 guide; one source noted ambiguity over its current status, so confirm the live Michelin listing before publishing.
- Rossellinis (Ravello) is listed at 1 star in the 2026 guide; older reviews reference a former 2-star period, so do not describe it as two-star.
- Il San Pietro di Positano is widely described as sitting between Positano and Praiano; some sources loosely place it 'in Praiano.' It is officially a Positano address (Via Laurito).
- Salerno (QSR) commercial route network has been changing; confirm current scheduled and private-aviation services before relying on it as a gateway.
- VIP fast-track/immigration specifics at Naples are concierge- and handler-dependent and may change seasonally; confirm named providers at booking.
- Naples VIP lounge naming ('Sala VIP Napoli') and exact private-terminal branding should be reconfirmed directly with the airport/handler.
- Could not independently confirm the exact branding 'Sala VIP Napoli' for the Naples Capodichino VIP lounge; general aviation/FBO handling at NAP (e.g. Signature Aviation) and a passenger VIP lounge are confirmed to exist, but the specific lounge name is unverified.
- Rossellinis is currently led by chef Giovanni Vanacore (not the long-cited Giovanni Vanacore predecessor); the record does not name a chef, so no correction needed, but verify the current chef name if added.
- Franco's Bar is confirmed (named after Franco Sersale, inaugurated 2015); the record's attribution of its design to 'Aldo Sersale' could not be independently confirmed.
- Naples VIP lounge exact branding 'Sala VIP Napoli' could not be independently confirmed; a passenger VIP lounge and general aviation/FBO handling (e.g. Signature Aviation) at NAP are confirmed to exist, but the specific lounge name is unverified - reconfirm with the airport/handler before publishing (retained in record's privateTerminals and lounges).
- Salerno (QSR) scheduled and private-aviation route network is actively changing (commercial service resumed July 2024, new general aviation terminal under development); confirm current routes and FBO services at time of travel before relying on it as a gateway (retained in record).
- VIP fast-track/immigration specifics at Naples are concierge- and ground-handler-dependent and may change seasonally; named providers should be confirmed at booking (retained in record).
- La Sponda's 1-star status with chef Gennaro Russo is corroborated by multiple sources including a Michelin Guide feature naming Russo, but Michelin's own restaurant pages return HTTP 403 to automated checks; confirm the live Michelin listing directly before publishing (retained in record).
- Franco's Bar at Le Sirenuse is confirmed (named after Franco Sersale, inaugurated 2015) but the record's design attribution to 'Aldo Sersale' could not be independently verified - this is outside the four risk categories and left in place, flagged for confirmation.
